A MONTH – LONG CALENDAR OF EVENTS
FOR NORTHERN ILLAWARRA’S COASTAL VILLAGES
The Northern Illawarra is gearing up for its month of annual festivals, markets, exhibitions and parties. A time of year that we come together to showcase its beauty, history, local talent, art,and just the pure essence of this stunning part of the world.
Commencing on the 19th October with the Science and Eco ‘Fete of the Earth’ event in Thirroul, and concluding on 12 November with the very special Historical Aviation Restoration Society (HARS) flyover at Stanwell Park during the Primary School’s memorial kite flying Competition, we invite everyone to diarise these events, and come on up to visit the coastal villages of your stunning Northern Illawarra!
Fete of the Earth

Packed with funky science, the 2008 program includes a Science Discovery Centre; hands on experiments; Meet the Scientist Program (sponsored by University of Wollongong); displays from National Parks & Wildlife, Futureworld, NSW Fisheries, Glengarry Cottage and ZUMA electric bikes; close encounters with frogs or reptiles.
For older kids: Build a Toy Solar Powered Boat or go geo with National Parks workshop Maparama. Workshops are for limited numbers so need to book early, plus all the traditional rides, homemade food and fun of a fete.
And to carbon offset the diesel for rides, every ride pass holder receives a free native plant!
Lions Club Annual Helensburgh District Fair

Festival of Flight

Stanwell Park Beach Reserve
A principal fundraising event for, and organised by the CWA, now in its 10th year, the Northern Illawarra’s Festival of Flight will provide an enjoyable day by the sea for the whole family at Stanwell Park beach Reserve with over 80 market stalls, rides, a huge book sale and live local music.
A new feature at this year’s event will be an historical exhibition and presentation by the Lawrence Hargrave Historical Centre. The exhibition will include actual pieces that were invented by Lawrence Hargraves while he lived in Stanwell Park, including his rotary engine and box kites.

Kite Day for Public Schools

2008 is the 5th Year that up to 1000 school children will take part in the Lawrence Hargrave Memorial Kite Day for Public Schools, in the Northern Illlawarra coastal village of Stanwell Park.
Commencing at 11.00am with a ceremony and an enactment of Lawrence Hargrave’s life as a “living lesson’ and followed at 12.30 to 2.00pm by students from all of Northern Illawarra’s primary schools taking their kites to the skies along Stanwell park beach for their annual kite flying competition, this important memorial day is a celebration of Lawrence Hargrave’s flight his box kite in l894 from the sand hill at Stanwell Park and a tribute to Eric Waite who spent many years fighting for recognition of this important event.

Over Stanwell Park Beach during Kite Day
A HARS Fly over of planes will take place at approximately 1pm during the ”Lawrence Hargrave Memorial Kite Day for Public Schools” event. A Qantas constellation "Connie", a DC3, a Neptune Bomber and various others will take part. The HARS flyover will support as a celebration of Lawrence Hargrave’s flight in his box kite in l894 from the sand hill at Stanwell Park.
