"Encouraging & Acquiring More Business"

Smart businesspeople know it’s important to find the extra edge that generates new business, but at the same time keep existing customers satisfied. Every so often look at your business tactics to see where you might be able to develop an “edge”. Here are some ideas:

Go to the source. Ask your existing customers for referrals and ideas on how you can improve. In exchange offer them an incentive - a free gift or discount - to express your gratitude to them for passing on your name, and for their helpful ideas.

Keep a close eye on trends in local, national and international demographics as well as trends in your own industry. Where might opportunities open up for your business? Where could there be a greater chance for new services you could provide?

Track how each new customer came to purchase from you. Was it a referral, a cold call, brochure, a direct mail shot or advertising? A pattern should develop that will show you where it really pays to focus your marketing efforts.

Prepare a letter or promotional piece that can be sent to companies within walking distance of your operation. If you are located in a large professional building, corporate complex or industrial estate, you may have a potential customer gold mine just waiting outside your door.

Join professional organisations and chambers of commerce, attending meetings regularly. Get to know the attendees. You’ll get exposure and be able to network with other entrepreneurs whose aim is the same as yours - to grow their business efficiently and profitably.

Talk about your business all the time. It truly is a small world. You never know when you’ll meet a potential customer, vendor or another professional who can help further your business goals.
